The Eastern Cape Transport Department says the death toll from Thursday’s horror accident between a train and mini-bus ferrying learners in Addo has risen to two.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said a 15-year-old learner succumbed to his injuries, hours after being airlifted to a hospital in Gqebera.
He said the deceased was among three learners who sustained serious injuries.
The driver of the minibus died at the scene.
Authorities said the scholar transport taxi was ferrying learners from Samkelwe Senior Secondary School when it was involved in a collision with a goods train.
The cause of the accident is not known and Addo police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
Reacting to the news, the Democratic Alliance called for a thorough investigation.
MPL, Marshall von Buchenroder said there should be a full investigation into the causes of the crash between the taxi and the train, reportedly carrying manganese, to ensure that this does not happen again.
