The Eastern Cape Education Department says its targeting a 70% pass rate for the matric class of 2014.
Education MEC Mandla Makupula says the efforts they are putting in to support learners, will ensure that the department's target will be met.
He says though the department was at the bottom of the list last year, the 64,9% pass rate was the highest pass mark in 20 years.
Makupula said after the supplementary exams were completed in March, the pass mark increased to 67 per cent.
The MEC said several initiatives were introduced during the year to help learners prepare for the matric exams.
"We have asked schools to start initiatives on their own, like weekend classess. In June we had 144 Winter schoools , throughout the province. We are still going to have 144 Spring schools" he said.
