The Mthatha High Court will hear argument on Thursday in a case in which several schools are seeking an order directing the Department of Basic Education to provide the required furniture to schools.
The Grahamstown based Legal Resources Centre is acting on behalf of the Centre for Child Law and seven rural schools in the province.
LRC attorney, Cameron McConnachie, says the case concerns the failure of the Department of Basic Education to deliver enough desks and chairs for all learners at public schools in the Eastern Cape.
He says while the seven schools received the required furniture in terms of earlier court orders, McConnachie says there are still thousands of learners with nowhere to sit or write.
He says Thursday's outcome will be the culmination of almost two years of litigation, adding that it's time that the provincial and national departments of basic education take their responsibilities seriously.
