Eastern Cape police are mourning the death of a Constable who was killed in the line of duty at Enyibeni Village in Bityi.
Constable Asive Dudumayo, 31, was shot and killed shortly after 5 pm on Sunday.
Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said Crime Prevention members were attending a complaint when they stopped to search a vehicle with four occupants inside.
He said as police began their search, two of the occupants fled, with Dudumayo giving chase.
Kinana said the police officers who stayed behind at the car, heard gunshots and upon investigation found that that Dudumayo had been shot.
"He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical care. Sadly, the member was said to have succumbed to injuries on arrival at the hospital," said Kinana.
Kinana said the body of one of the suspects was also found near to where Dudumayo had fallen.
Police confiscated two firearms, ammunition, and a Red Toyota Corolla.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene condemned the incident, describing the slain officer as being a disciplined and loyal member of the SAPS.
Mene added that attacks on police officers will not in any way deter them from pursuing their constitutional mandate to serve and protect our communities.
