Police in King Williams Town have arrested a 30-year-old man they believe was part of a gang planning business robberies in the town.
Spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci, said the suspect was arrested on Monday during a joint operation by members of the Provincial Head Office Crime Intelligence, KWT Flying Squad, and Crime Intelligence.
She said they were acting on information about a planned business robbery by the suspects.
Soci said after the man’s alleged accomplices dropped him off in Cambridge Street police pounced, seizing three firearms and 14 rounds of live ammunition.
“The possibility that the firearms could be linked to other reported similar cases cannot be ruled out and they will be sent for ballistic testing,” she said.
The suspect is expected to appear in the King William's Town Magistrate Court on Thursday, on charges of the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
His alleged accomplices are still at large.
