The first batch of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine will arrive in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.
The Spokesperson for the Department of Health in the Eastern Cape Sizwe Kupelo says the rollout of the vaccine will be implemented as soon as possible with both public and private health care workers being the first to receive their jab.
He says during phase two, teachers, miners, police officials, soldiers, SASSA, Home Affairs and Post Office employees as well as inmates will be vaccinated.
People over the age of 18 who suffer from comorbidities as well as residents over the age of 60 will be vaccinated in phase two.
All other people will fall under the third phase of the vaccine rollout.
The Acting Superintendent-General for the Eastern Cape Department of Health Dr Sibongile Zulu says the vaccine will arrive at the Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth as well as the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha on Wednesday.
He says trained inoculators will hit the ground running as the province has a target to vaccinate 3.8 million people to achieve herd immunity.
Kupelo says it is important to mention that no individual will be forced to take the vaccine.
