A provincial traffic officer appeared in court in King Williams Town on Tuesday on charges of corruption.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, said that Provincial Traffic Officer, Dean Jasson, aged 32, was arrested by Task Team attached to Provincial Organised Crime, under the leadership of Brig Stanley Sibidla.
She said the arrest followed after the officer allegedly accepted a bribe from a driver who had contravened traffic regulations in March 2017.
Govender said that Jasson appeared in the King William’s Town Magistrates Court on Tuesday on charges of corruption.
He was released on R5 000, 00 bail. He is expected to appear in court again on 28 June 2018.
Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General, Liziwe Ntshinga, commended the Task Team for the arrest.
“We are sending a strong message to all would-be offenders that all forms of corruption will be dealt with harshly in the Province. We also appeal to the members of the community to report any form of corruption that they come across including at our Provincial roads,” she said.
