EC Provincial Portfolio Commitee conducts oversight visit to PE schools

The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature Portfolio Commitee on education is in Port Elizabeth this week on oversight visit to schools in the Metro.

Commitee Chairperson, Busisiwe Ndlangisa-Makaula said the visit to schools is part of the Department of Education's intervention to resolve long-standing issues in schools in the province.

Ndlangisa-Makaula said the commitee started at Morningside High School and Qaphelani High School in Kwazakhele on Monday

She said some of the issues identified at the two schools include teacher shortages at Qaphelani High School and infighting between the acting principal and school governing body at Morningside High.

Ndlangisa-Makuala says the committee will visit two schools a day for the rest of the week and then draft a report with recommendations to the Eastern Cape Department of Education.

"After coming back from these visits we will go back and compile a report, make our recommendations to the department and give them time frames. Other issues that are short term we instruct the department to deal with them while we are still here" she said.

Ndlangisa-Makuala added that the committee would then give the department 30 days to resolve short term issues.

She said the committee will return again after schools reopen following the June school holidays.
