The Ntabankulu Magistrates Court has denied bail to the 59-year-old principal of the Bonxa High School who is accused of repeatedly raping a Grade 12 learner.
Mzimkhulu Zibi, who was arrested earlier this month, appeared in court on Thursday.
The National Prosecuting Authority said he allegedly raped the 21-year-old twice on two separate occasions and allegedly threatened her with death if she spoke about it.
Zibi was arrested following an outcry from learners and the community.
NPA Provincial spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, says the state had opposed the application arguing that Zibi had not shown exceptional circumstances required for his release on bail.
Meanwhile, the Bhisho Education Department also welcomed the court's decision.
Spokesperson, Mali Mtima, said all educators are expected to "behave like parents" and to uphold standards of professionalism, while the Department was offering support to the learner.
The case has been postponed to 28 July in the KwaBhaca Regional Court.
