The former husband of an Eastern Cape woman who was abducted and murdered in Qumbu earlier this month is among five people arrested for the crime.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, the suspects include the woman’s 52-year-old ex-husband who is a policeman, two sisters aged between 30 and 40, a 55-year-old man and a 38-year-old man believed to be a foreign national.
They were arrested in the Mthatha area between Thursday and Friday.
Kinana said the breakthrough was a sequel to the incident where the 51-year-old Nosipho Sidabuka and her 22-year-old son were travelling from Mabaleni Locality in Tina Falls to Qumbu when their vehicle was blocked by a silver VW Polo with Durban registration plates.
He said the two occupants pretended to be enquiring about something from the woman before they pointed a firearm at her and demanded money.
“It is further alleged that one of the suspects fired a shot towards the victim and grabbed her handbag with personal belongings and further dragged her to their vehicle. The other suspect assaulted the victim's son with a pistol and he sustained injuries in the upper body before fleeing.”
Her body was found several days later.
Kinana said that all the arrested suspects would be charged with murder, kidnapping, attempted murder and the possession of an unlicensed firearm when they appear in court on Monday.
The investigation was still continuing and more arrests were expected.
