A female police officer from Dimbaza in the Eastern Cape has been arrested for the illegal possession of firearms.
Provincial police spokesperson, brigadier Marinda Mills, confirmed that the police constable was arrested over the weekend.
"She is alleged to be involved with a number of fire-arms that are unaccounted for at Dimbaza police station," Mills said.
"We have got seasoned detectives on the case, we've had several breakthroughs and we believe more arrests are to follow."
Earlier on Wednesday Eastern Cape police reported that a sergeant in Mthatha was arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Police spokesperson, lieutenant-colonel Mzukisi Fatyela, says the 50-year-old sergeant was arrested at his home in Northcrest in Mthatha.
He says police seized a .303 rifle, a shotgun and a 7.65mm pistol and dozens of rounds of ammunition. The serial numbers on some of the weapons had been filed off.
Fatyela says the policeman was suspended last year on similar weapons charges.
It is alleged that the policeman had been running a private security company on the side.
