Eastern Cape police are searching for the suspects involved in a cash-in-transit heist on the N2 between Butterworth and East London on Friday.
Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela says guards from G4S Security Solutions were on their way to East London after collecting money from various outlets in the town and surroundings.
She says near Ndabakazi, the driver heard shots being fired at their vehicle from a white Isuzu bakkie with Gauteng registration plates.
Two tyres of their security vehicle were damaged and he decided to stop when the bakkie made a u-turn and the suspects continued shooting at them.
The driver and his crew ran away but they were cornered and told to lie down.
Captain Mgolodela says the suspects blew up the truck with an explosive device and following the explosion, money was lying all over the road.
They took some of the money and fled the scene.
A large crowd of community members and vehicles passing by took the rest of the cash.
The exact amount that was taken is not known at this stage.
Police found three live R5 rounds and 43 R5 and 9mm cartridges at the scene.
