Members from the Mthatha policing cluster were involved in a high-speed chase in the early hours of Tuesday morning with an armed robbery suspect who tried to bump their police vehicle out the way when they tried to pull him over.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela, said the drama unfolded shortly after 1 am when police were on the lookout for suspects who had pulled off a cash-in-transit heist between Mthatha and Qumbu earlier in the evening.
Fatyela said police cornered the vehicle but the driver managed to evade arrest.
He said that upon searching the Red Isuzu bakkie, which had not been reported stolen, police found several firearms inside.
"Police members found an AK 47 assault rifle with one magazine and 31 rounds of ammunition, two G3 rifles with two magazines and 41 rounds of ammunition. They also seized one 9mm pistol with one magazine and 14 rounds of ammunition, two Balaclavas and two sets of hand gloves," Fatyela said.
He said that earlier on Monday night a G4 Security vehicle returning from Qumbu was robbed by gunmen travelling in several vehicles.
"We had a cash-in-transit robbery last night at about 18h45. It happened between Mthatha and Qumbu where the G4S security guards had been collecting money from the shops in Qumbu. They were returning to Mthatha when they were accosted by unknown armed men travelling in three vehicles," said Fatyela.
He added that a large but undisclosed amount of money was stolen and that no-one was injured in the two incidents.
