EC police mourns loss of two members


Police in the Eastern Cape on Thursday said it mourned the loss of two police officials in separate incidents recently.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, said in a statement Thursday: “It is with great sadness that we report the loss of two of our police officials who died in separate incidents over the past weeks in the province. 

“It is indeed a setback when we lose our members in senseless incidents of murder. Our sincerest condolences are extended to their bereaved families, friends and colleagues, as we share in their loss and pain. We will render the best possible support to their families and make sure that those responsible are brought to book.”

According to police, it is alleged that on 25 June 2017 at about 2 am, 39-year-old off duty Sergeant Makhaya Copiso, attached to the Queenstown Public Order Policing unit, was shot and killed during an altercation. A suspect has been arrested and was due to appear in the Ezibeleni Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

“In another tragic incident, the body of 36-year-old Const Vuyo Matshisi was found in the boot of a burnt out vehicle in Peddie on 2nd July 2017. He was stationed at Gelvandale SAPS and was off duty at the time. SAPS are investigating a case of murder and all circumstances surrounding the murder are being investigated.”
