Eastern Cape Police have denied allegations of assault made by the third suspect in the Jayde Panayiotou murder investigation.
Earlier on Tuesday 30 year-old Sizwezakhe Vumazonke made his first appearance in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates court, sporting a swollen eye and a cut to the right side of his face.
Magistrate Jan Van Der Westhuizen asked Vumazonke what had happened to his face, to which he replied "I was assaulted and beaten up by the police."
Brigadier Marinda Mills said that investigating officers will deny any wrong doing and that Vumazonke "possibly sustained injuries in a scuffle during his arrest."
Vumazonke will remain in custody and will be back in court on the 19th of June, alongside Jayde's husband Christopher, who appeared in court on Monday in connection with her murder.
They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder.
Christopher Panayiotou has not yet applied for bail and also remains in custody.
