A suspected vehicle hijacker shot and killed himself, before a second suspect was arrested near eMaxesibeni, formerly Mount Ayliff, in the Eastern Cape.
Spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu says the Highway Patrol Unit received information regarding a motor vehicle that was hijacked in Msobomvu in the early hours of Saturday morning.
She says the vehicle, which was heading in the direction of eMaxesibeni was stopped and two men, one with a firearm, fled on foot in different directions.
The armed suspect fired shots at the police while running, and as the members closed in him, he allegedly shot himself in the head.
He died at the scene.
A 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off, was found next to him.
Colonel Naidu says the second suspect, aged 33, was found hiding in a nearby toilet and was arrested.
He is being detained on a charge of possession of a suspected stolen vehicle and is expected to appear in court soon.
