The 37 police stations in the Sarah Baartman District reported 706 arrests between 30 December 2020 and 5 January 2021 for the contravention of the Disaster Management Act.
Sergeant Majola Nkohli says some people were fined for transgressions which included not wearing a mask and visiting beaches.
He says a tavern owner in Thornhill, who allegedly sold liquor to patrons on New Year's Eve was fined R10 000 and police also seized alcohol valued at around 1-million rand.
Meanwhile, Jeffreys Bay police have arrested five men for possession of suspected stolen property and also charged them for contravening the lockdown measures for transporting liquor and travelling during the curfew.
Sergeant Nkohli says members from the Humansdorp K9-unit were patrolling in the Fountains Estate area in the early hours of Friday morning when they spotted a green Jeep.
He says police managed to stop the vehicle on the N2, and the five occupants failed to produce a permit to be on the road.
On searching the vehicle, police found liquor, a laptop and clothing.
The five men, aged between 24 and 34, were arrested at the scene and will appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
