A systems controller at Buffalo City Municipality's Health Department has appeared in court on charges of fraud and corruption.
Baxolile Ngoloyi (35) appeared in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday alongside co-accused, 29-year-old businessman, Simthembile Smith.
In a statement, the Hawks said that Ngoloyi had allegedly manipulated his department's systems and made a fraudulent payment of R120 000 to Smith's company which "never rendered any services for the department."
"The department stopped payment of R140 000 before it could be made. BCM reported the alleged crime to the Hawks in June 2018," said Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Anelisa Ngcakani.
She said Ngoloyi and Smith were each granted R500 bail by the Specialised Commercial Crime court and will be back in court again on 17 February 2020.
Meanwhile, a 42-year-old Labour Department administration clerk appeared in the East London Magistrate's Court on charges of fraud and corruption.
Ngcakani said 42-year-old Samnkelo Nkwateni was also arrested on Thursday for allegedly demanding payment from two business people "for a letter of good standing" which she says is usually provided for free.
Nkwateni allegedly received a total of R8000 from the two unsuspecting people
He was remanded in custody until Monday when he is expected to apply for bail.
