An off-duty police officer was shot and hijacked near Butterworth in the Eastern Cape on Sunday.
The 45-year-old officer, attached to Buttterworth SAPS, was attacked and robbed when he and other family members were stopped while traveling in the town's main street.
Police say three armed men ordered the officer and the other occupants out of the car, shot him in the upper body and robbed him of his service pistol.
The officer is in a serious condition in hospital and cases of attempted murder and car hijacking have been opened.
