The Mnquma Local Municipality in Butterworth says it is investigating a video recording which allegedly exposes what appears to be bags of mealie meal infested with maggots.
Municipal spokesperson, Loyiso Mpalantshane says reports suggest that these bags were part of food parcels that were distributed to communities as part of government's efforts to provide food security during the national COVID-19 lockdown.
He says the municipality has alerted the SA Social Security Agency and the Department of Social Development.
"These departments have, in turn, committed themselves to ensure that the situation is resolved swiftly. It is important to note that the Municipality was not involved in the procurement of these products", he said.
Mpalantshane also called on all affected communities to immediately stop consumption or using these spoilt products and report similar incidents to the Municipality or their nearest SASSA or Social Development offices.
