The DA in the Eastern Cape says the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, responsible for the Lesseyton Sports Stadium debacle, awarded tenders worth a staggering R162 million “for questionable road maintenance contracts” last November and December.
And, according to DA MPL, Jane Cowley, the most “outrageous” of these tenders was awarded to Makali Plant and Construction to upgrade the 6.7 km Fikile Gwadana Road in Ezibeleni, at a tender value of R98.5 million.
“The provincial norm for the upgrading of existing rural roads is roughly R11.6 million per kilometre, well above the national norm. Internal road upgrades are generally far cheaper, averaging between R5 and R6 million per kilometre, but not in Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality,” Cowley said.
She said they expect no less from the Enoch Mgijima Municipality which was embroiled in another embarrassing scandal by spending R15 million on the drab Lesseyton Sports Stadium.
Cowley noted that this week Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Xolile Nqatha said that the report he ordered into the Lesseyton Stadium, which has been sitting with him for two weeks already, will only be released after it has been adopted by the Enoch Mgijima council next month.
