Three municipalities in the Eastern Cape are set to benefit from the more than R1bn allocated to drought in the Province by the national government.
These are Amathole District, Sarah Baartman District and Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipalities.
This was revealed during a Provincial Drought Task Team meeting held in Bhisho on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by all the drought-stricken municipalities, as well as key stakeholders - including Provincial Treasury, Water and Sanitation, Rural Development and Agrarian Reform and the Office of the Premier.
The funds have already been transferred to the affected municipalities on 28 March.
Eastern Cape Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Fikile Xasa said the funds will be used mostly for projects such as drilling, equipping and recommissioning of boreholes, as well as identifying potential sites for groundwater extraction.
