EC MEC calls on women to tender for construction work

Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liasion, Helen Sauls-August, has called on women in the province to register on the department's data base and bid for tenders.

Sauls- August was addressing the media at her Department's East London offices in Chiselhurst on Thursday.

She spoke of the efforts made by her Department to ensure that at least thirty percent of housing construction work is done by women-owned business.

Sauls-August says there's a lot of work in the Eastern Cape and government subsidised housing programmes are moving at a fast space..

"There's a lot work in the Eastern Cape. We are really moving with government subsidy houses but would also want women to come forward, the established contractors. More space is needed in social housing where would want women contractors in that space," she said.

Sauls August added that the department has far exceeded the target of building one thousand five hundred and ninety six housing units- specifically for women by women.

"The national minister has made a commitment that each province must ensure that they complly with building 1956 housing units, specifically for women, by women. We are very proud to announce that we are far exceeding that target. We are already at 5300 units that have been allocated only to femal contractors to build for female-headed households," said Sauls August.
