A 27-year-old Eastern Cape has been jailed for 22 years following his conviction for the murder of his young girlfriend.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Siphenathi Nyembezi was sentenced in the Centane Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the murder of a 21-year-old student, Nokuthula Gwantshu,
She died in August last year after sustaining 18 stab wounds during an altercation with Nyembezi at their place in the Gobe Area in the district of Centane.
NPA spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said Nyembezi had reported the stabbing to the police and took police to the scene. He claimed to have acted in self-defence, saying Gwantshu had attacked him with a knife.
He said the court rejected his defence and found him guilty as charged.
The Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Barry Madolo, welcomed the sentence.
