A 26-year-old Eastern Cape man is in custody for the brutal murder of his 90-year-old grandmother who died in a house fire in Zisoyini Location at Butterworth.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said following Nongenile Sobetwa's death on 9 June, an inquest docket was opened.
Her charred remains were found on a chair behind a door of her house.
However, Naidu said community members accused her grandson of her murder and severely assaulted him.
She said Thulani Sobetwa, who lived with his elderly grandmother, was detained for questioning on Tuesday and was later charged with murder.
He is due to appear in court again next Thursday for a bail application.
