A 29-year-old man will appear in court in Mqanduli in the Eastern Cape on Friday for allegedly raping and killing his neighbour and suffocating her three-year-old grandchild.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the attack occurred in the Upper Cezu Locality in Mqanduli on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Mothando Bhavu who died after being stabbed.
Naidu said members of the community alerted police to the murders on Thursday morning and the man was subsequently arrested.
“The suspect’s house was searched and the murder weapon, as well as blood-stained clothing, was found,” she said.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene commended the community’s involvement in working with the police to ensure the swift arrest.
