An Eastern Cape man who allegedly helped his friends to escape from police custody earlier this month has been arrested.
The four suspects escaped on their way back from the Whittlesea police station last week.
A spokesperson for the Hawks Captain Anelisa Ngcakani says the men managed to overpower two police officers and then hijacked their police van.
The 40-year-old Patrick Mshudulu allegedly assisted the four prisoners by picking them up from the village of Dongwe, where they abandoned the police vehicle and organised a hideout for them in the same area.
He was charged with aiding and abetting a prisoner(s), released on warning and told to appear in court again on the 15th of April.
One of the escapees, 32-year-old Shadrack Mzimkulu was re-arrested a day after his escape and his accomplice, 29-year-old Odwa Siqhanqalala handed himself over.
They will appear in court on the 29th of April where more charges will be added against them including escape from lawful custody, robbery of police firearms and theft
Both were initially arrested in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery in November 2018.
Captain Ngcagani says they also confiscated one of the two firearms stolen during the escape.
Police are still searching for the 32-year-old Lundi Mzimkulu and the 33-year-old Mbeko Stuurman who was arrested on a charge of rape.
