Two learners from Wodehouse Junior Secondary School in Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape have drowned.
The Department of Education in the Eastern Cape said the tragedy occurred at a Bed and Breakfast establishment in East London on Sunday.
Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima, said a third learner was admitted to hospital after surviving the ordeal in a swimming pool.
He said the learners the learners were taking part in the 8th provincial Economic and Management Science Quiz competition in the city.
Mtima told Algoa FM News that all the educators and subject advisors who were accompanying the learners from the district were referred for counselling.
He said competition, which started on today, will continue through to Wednesday.
