Two Eastern Cape learners were killed in an accident in on the R-408 between Engcobo and Dutywa on Monday night.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, says the driver of the overloaded vehicle, was the third fatality in the accident.
She says nine other learners were rushed to All Saints Hospital at Engcobo with serious injuries.
MEC Tikana says the vehicle, which is certified to carry seven passengers, was carrying five additional passengers when it crashed.
She said the learners were from the Pakamisa Senior Secondary School at Engcobo.
A case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
