An Eastern Cape matric learner has been killed in an accident, while seven others were injured when the bakkie they were travelling in overturned.
Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mandla Makupula, said he was saddened by the news of Wednesday’s tragic crash in the Nqeleni area in the OR Tambo education district.
He has now dispatched a team to assist the families of the child who died and the others who were injured.
The Bhisho Education Department said children's parents had hired the bakkie driver to ferry the children to school and back.
“The eight learners (8) were travelling in a bakkie from school when it got into an accident and overturned leaving one learner dead,” a Department statement said.
“Of the eight learners, one has passed on, three are at Mabeja local clinic for the treatment of minor injuries and four have been admitted to Canzibe hospital”.
"We send our condolences and prayers to the family that lost their child during this accident. I hope they find solace in the Lord, God in this difficult time of their lives. I also wish those hospitalised a speedy recovery", said Makupula.
