The MEC for Education in the Eastern Cape Mlungisi Mvoko has extended the Department's heartfelt condolences after a 7-year-old grade 1 learner drowned at Central Primary School in King William's Town on Tuesday.
The school was holding it's Superstars Summer Pool Picnic for 28 learners in recognition of those who'd done well academically when the tragedy happened.
Education department spokesperson Loyiso Pulumani says when paramadics arrived on the scene, they tried to resuscitate the young girl, but to no avail.
The parents were called and were informed of the tragedy.
According to the Department two teachers and a swimming coach were deployed to supervise the learners. They were attending to a child who was injured when they were informed of a learner swimming "face down".
The department has offered psychological support and counselling to those affected by the tragedy.
The name of the victim has not yet been released.
