An Eastern Cape learner has died and six others are in hospital following an attempt to kill a snake on the school grounds by dousing the grass in sanitizer and setting it alight.
Eastern Cape Education Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima, said three learners sustained serious burn wounds when the fire spread to a shed housing two 25 litres containers of sanitizer which apparently burst.
He said the three seriously injured learners were rushed to the St Barnabas Hospital in Libode, where one child died.
Four other learners are receiving treatment in the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha.
The investigation into Tuesday’s incident at the Nzuluka Senior Primary School in Libode is continuing.
