The Hawks' Provincial Kidnapping Task team arrested three kidnapping suspects in Mbizana in the Eastern Cape.
Provincial spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, says the arrests were made during the early hours of Thursday morning.
She says the three allegedly kidnapped the 36-year-old victim after hearing that the person had received a R30 million payout from the Road Accident Fund.
Mgolodela said the suspects reportedly forced the victim to withdraw cash from his account so as to view the balance, which was far less than they expected.
“To get himself off the hook, the victim told the suspects that he had an investment with Old Mutual.”
She said one suspect allegedly accompanied the man to Old Mutual where he was able to alert the consultant to his situation.
Mgolodela said this was followed by a commotion and the suspect fled, but the victim was able to identify him leading to the subsequent arrests.
She said the three will appear in court soon, while the arrest of two more suspects “is imminent.”
