A four-year-old Belgian Shepherd has helped to put a dent into the activities of a suspected poaching syndicate.
Eastern Cape police said the police dog sniffed out the lair of suspected poachers in bushes near the Fish River on Wednesday, leading to the discovery of diving gear valued at over R50 000.00
Police spokesperson, Warrant-Officer Majola Nkohli, said; “the energetic Adze, and his handler, Warrant Officer, Tertius Neethling, followed up information about suspected abalone poachers, who were believed to be operating near the Fish River and in a nearby nature reserve.
He said Adze joined the search in dense bushes and in no time had sniffed out the diving equipment in the shrubs.
Nkohli said the items seized included wetsuits, diving fins, booties, and shucking tools.
No arrests were made.
