EC initiates dying from dehydration

The Eastern Cape Health Department says it will dispatch medical practitioners to various initiation schools across the province to assess the condition of the initiates.

Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba says the move has been prompted by the shocking 17 initiates that have lost their lives while undergoing the rite this summer season.

She says 15 of the 17 deaths were caused by dehydration, meaning that the initiates are still being deprived water despite the department's warning against the move.

Gomba says it is a myth that not drinking water will help initiates heal faster.

She says these visits are a pro-active step which they hope will help prevent further deaths.

Gomba has also called for the immediate arrest of traditional surgeons and traditional nurses responsible for the unnecessary deaths.
