Two officials from the Hawks in Mthatha are expected to appear in the local Magistrates Court on Friday following their arrest on allegations of corruption.
Spokesperson for the Hawks in the Eastern Cape Colonel Katlego Mogale says a Sergeant and Captain aged 41 and 43 were arrested on Thursday in a sting operation.
She says the Captain, who said he was stationed in Gauteng, allegedly called the complainant on the 31st of July, to inform him that the Department of Labour had opened a case against his company.
Mogale says four days later he called again and demanded an amount of R400 000 to make the docket disappear.
She says when the complainant informed them that he did not have the money he was called again the following day where he was instructed to bring an amount of R50 000 to a designated meeting point in Mthatha.
Colonel Mogale says it was then that the complainant reported the matter to the Hawks, who set up an undercover operation to nab their colleagues.
She says a transaction took place at the meeting point and the officers were arrested moments later.
An amount of R10 000 was found in their possession.
The Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya expressed his satisfaction with the swift response of the joint operation.
He said these kinds of crimes bring the name of the Hawks into disrepute and reiterated their stance to continue to act without fear, favour or prejudice.
