A report from the Health Systems Trust on the District Health Barometer and the South African Health Review, indicates significant gains in some areas, but points out issues that need further attention.
Gauteng has been shown to have 69 health professionals per 10,000 people, whereas the Eastern Cape has 44 per 10,000.
The Health Ministry says the TB cure rate for new smear positive patients has increased from 51 percent in 2004 to 71 percent in 2009.
The review found that the large gap between good health policies and implementation thereof, among others, is one of the reasons why South Africa's health care system provides low value for money.
