EC gambling revenue down

Gross turnover from gambling in the Eastern Cape dropped from R1.68 billion in April to R1.53 billion in May, according to figures on the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board’s web site.

Income from slots decreased from R1.49 billion to R1.33 billion, while revenue from tables dropped from R41.6 million to R35.3 million, while route and site operations bucked the trend, increasing from R127.1 million to R134.7 million.

Income from horse racing remained virtually static, declining marginally from R25.2 million to a fraction under R25 million.

The amount accruing to the Provincial Treasury in gambling taxes also declined between April and May from R8.9 million to R8.3 million, with taxes paid from casino gambling operations dropping from R7.1 million to R6.4 million.

Tax paid by route and site operations increased from R1.2 million to R1.3 million, while horse racing contributed marginally less, dropping from R604 531 to R600 897.
The Provincial Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism has budgeted to collect just under R118 million from gambling taxes in 2012/13.
