EC election results: ANC has overwhelming lead

The Electoral Commission Regional Supervisor, Crosby Bacela, says by late morning 60% of the votes had been captured in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Speaking to the media a little earlier, Bacela said all votes from polling stations in Uitenhage have been counted and the 40% that remains is from the Port Elizabeth voting stations.

He says this should be completed by around 3pm.

Meanwhile, Bacela also commented on incidents where tents were blown away by strong winds resulting in voting stations moving to other facilities on Wednesday.

He says it did not impact the voting process.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, has commended metro residents on heeding the call to cast their vote at the 6th national general elections.

He says residents came out in their numbers to brave the cold and rain across the city to exercise their democratic right to vote.

Bobani says while visiting a number of polling stations across the metro, he was struck by the orderly fashion in which voters conducted themselves patiently waiting their turn to vote.

He further says despite a few glitches with scanners not working and wet weather conditions, voting at most voting stations proceeded smoothly.

Eastern Cape

Votes for the Eastern Cape Province is still being processed with the ANC showing a strong lead, followed by the DA and the EFF.

The EC is also currently the province with the most spoilt ballots of 13 021 compared to the National number of 70 639.
