The Eastern Cape Education Department said that a subject advisor in Lusikisiki is in custody for the alleged rape of a six-year-old child.
Department spokesperson, Loyiso Pulumani, said he was also served with a notice of suspension in the police cells where he is being held.
He said the 54-year-old man, who is based at the Department’s district office in the area, was also severely assaulted by members of the community over the weekend after the rape allegations surfaced.
A video of the incident is also reportedly doing the rounds on social media.
Pulumani said on Tuesday that the Department will be instituting formal disciplinary processes and will also provide the Education Labour Relations Council with a full investigation report within two days.
He said the Department was providing counselling services to learners and educators at Khotso Primary School.
