The Eastern Cape Education Department has admitted that it may have erred in focusing all its preparation strategies on grade 12 learners in an effort to improve matric results.
Speaking at the department's third annual annual Learner Attainment Improvement Strategy Summit underway in East London, Department deputy director general institutional operations management, Sithembele Zibi said over the years they haven't been paying enough attention on the general education development (GED) band, which is grade R to 9.
"Unless we improve the performance and understanding of concepts at the GED band it's going to take time before our grade 12 results improve," said Zibi.
He says the the will have to come up with a plans to assist the GED band.
Zibi added that the summit will also look at the issue of school functionality and curriculum implementation.
"We aim to ensure effective teaching happens, whether it be linked to resourcing of schools by way of provision of teachers and other equipment," he said.
Departmental District monitoring and provincial Intervention teams will be evaluated as well as the districts readiness plans for 2013.
