EC Education MEC upbeat about first day of new school year ...

Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mandla Makapula, says he's satisified with the first day of the new school year.

He spent Wednesday visiting schools in the Butterworth area, including one school which had a dismal 4.9% matric pass rate

Makapula said at the schools that he had visited, teachers were present, books had been delivered and teaching and learning had taken place.

"Generally, I've got a positive attitude that the today it went well. I'm confident that things are going to roll out more effectively this year," he said.

Deputy president Kgalema Mothlanthe, deputy minister of education Enver Surty and Eastern Cape premier Noxolo Kiviet visited schools in the Lusikisiki area.
