EC Easter road death toll down

The Eastern Cape Transport Department said 13 people died on the province's roads over the Easter weekend.

Department spokesperson, Ncedo Kumbaca, said a total of 45 crashes were recorded between Thursday and Sunday.

He said two people were killed in 14 accidents recorded in the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, inclusive of Nelson Mandela Bay.
Kumbaca said five fatalities were recorded in 27 crashes in the Amathole District Municipality including Buffalo City.

"The concern that we have is that people continue to drive long distances without rest, we still have challenges of fatigue.  And, again we still have people driving on our roads drunk and those who are driving recklessly," he said.

However, Kumbaca says they are encouraged by the fact the decreasing number of fatalities because "last year this time we had 35 fatalities".

Kumbaca said the routes with most accidents were the N2 which accounted for 7 accidents, the R-63 which recorded five accidents, the R-72, four accidents, the R-75 with three accidents and Sandile Road in Mdantsane in East London which ccounted for three accidents.
