Eastern Cape police have made at least 1 686 arrests over the Easter Weekend, yielding operation Paseka a success.
Spokesperson, Lieutenant Khaya Tonjeni, says arrests were executed for crimes ranging from murder, robbery, rape and drug related crimes amongst others.
He says police concentrated on hot spots such as clamping down on illegal shebeens.
Tonjeni says the number of murder, assault, rape and common robbery cases showed a decrease in Mthatha, East London, Mdantsane and Port Elizabeth.
More than 82 roadblocks were held and police also confiscated just under 300 kilograms of dagga.
