EC drug mule comes home after 8 years in Thailand prison

The Eastern Cape Social Development Department says it will be offering its assistance to the family of convicted South African drug mule, Nolubabalo Nobanda.

Nobanda who hails from Makanda, formerly Grahamstown, is set to return to South Africa on Thursday.

She was arrested at Bangkok Airport in December 2011, after police found 1.5kg of cocaine hidden in her artificial dreadlocks.

Nobanda, who earlier pleaded guilty, was granted a pardon by the King of Thailand, after having served seven years of her 15-year sentence.

She admitted to authorities that she had smuggled the drugs, and said she had been hired to deliver the cocaine to a customer at a hotel in Bangkok.

The spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development, Gcobani Maswana, says their assistance to the family and now 30-year-old, Nobanda, will roll-out in what he said would be a holistic manner.

Speaking briefly to the media at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday, Babsie said that was thankful for the support and prayers she received from South Africans over the years.

She said she's returning stronger, but for now, just wanted to spend time with her family to catch up.
