EC Department of education seek urgent interdict against "illegal occupiers"

The Eastern Cape Education Department will be seeking an urgent interdict on  to evict a group of people who have been occupying their regional offices since the eighth of this month.

The group from Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas began the sit-in in a bid to get the Department to urgently commit to having a teacher in every classroom.

Schools in the Northern Areas were closed for several weeks, when parents decided to close the schools until four core demands tabled with the Department were met.

Although all the demands were not yet fulfilled, parents decided that schools will re-open while talks with the Department continue.

Education Department spokesperson, Loyiso Pulumani, said they wanted the court to rule on what he said was the continued illegal occupation of the main hall at the PE District Office.

The protesters said they would be opposing the application which was expected to be heard in the City's High Court.

Meanwhile ANC MPL Christian Martin wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday morning that he, along with members of NAECOM and the SKAC will oppose the request for an interim order by the Department of Education.

He says they were served with documents to appear in the High Court on 23 February 2016 at 9 am due to their alleged illegal sleep in at the Department of Education.
