The National Prosecuting Authority says the regional court in Engcobo in the Eastern Cape has sentenced five rapists to life imprisonment in recent rulings.
NPA spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, says one of those jailed in the past three weeks was Thamsanqa Mdutyini, who was jailed for life this week barely fives days after raping a 20-year-old woman.
Tyali says Mdutyini stabbed his victim before taking the bleeding woman to his place where he raped her repeatedly.
He says these harsh sentences were a result of cooperation between authorities and members of local communities who provided information to the police.
Tyali says the sentences also reaffirms the judiciary's position that violence against women and children will not be tolerated.
