EC cops seize dagga worth more than R8m

Eastern Cape have confiscated dagga worth worth more than R8.5m between the January 1 and June 26th.

According to police management, police stations in the Graaff-Reinet cluster, lead in dagga confiscations for the first quarter with one thousand 1176 kilograms of dagga seized.

They're followed by the Mthatha and King Williams Town clusters with confiscation of 391 and 307 kilograms of dagga respectively.

Eastern Cape deputy provincial commissioner for operational services, Major-General Jonas Mbambala, says most of the dagga was seized at road blocks and stop and searches.

He says "in commemoration of the International and National Day Against Substance (drug and alcohol) Abuse, SAPS held nationally the Substance Awareness Week from the 24th to the 28th of June 2013. This event focuses on creating greater awareness and understanding about the dangers and consequences of drug use."

"Our members are doing a sterling job and as management we congratulate them. Their efforts do not go unnoticed, we salute them and we ask them to please continue with the good work," said Major-General Mbambala.

He added that the confiscation of any kind of drugs was a victory in a fight against crime. "Drugs in general are playing a big role in violent crimes like murder, rape and robbery. Once drug users are addicted they will do anything to get another fix, even resort to crime," added Major-General Mbambala.
