The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been called on to probe the death of a man near Yako informal settlement near Butterworth, allegedly at the hands of two SAPS members.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said it's alleged that two police officials who were hunting for the suspects who allegedly stole their cell phones last week, fired several shots in different localities.
He said the two confronted four men walking together on Sunday and “fired shots” leading to the four running off in different directions.
“On Sunday the 23 January 2023, one of the four men who escaped from the shooting was found lying dead in the morning. On investigation the police found that he had a bullet wound in the upper body and was certified dead by paramedics,” Kinana said.
He said cases of murder, attempted murder, and malicious injury to property have been registered while no arrests have yet been made.
“The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene has expressed shock at the incident and said the law must take its course. General Mene further encouraged the police to cooperate with the ongoing investigations.”
