The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has welcomed the jail sentences imposed on two Eastern Cape police officers for sexual offences.
IPID said the husband and wife were sentenced in the High Court in East London on Friday.
“The 53-year-old police sergeant was, earlier today, sentenced to 25 years after he was found guilty of the rape of his stepdaughter, who was 13 years old at the time,” said IPID’s Phaladi Shuping.
He said the court imposed an additional five-year sentence for two counts of sexual assault and this will be added to the rape sentence.
“The 36-year-old police constable, who is a biological mother of the complainant, was sentenced to five years imprisonment or a fine of R5000 for her failure to report rape and sexual assault cases after they were brought to her attention by the complainant,” Shuping said.
The two police officers cannot be named to protect the identity of the complainant.
Shuping said the East London policeman sexually assaulted and later raped his stepdaughter at the police barracks between 2018 and 2021.
